Geolocation data is practically a must for logisticians today. But more often than not, this data is not properly exploited to its fullest. In this article, we want to show you how dataviz can help you take advantage of this simple data to optimize a transportation plan.
Two analysis levels: real-time tracking and logistics analytics
Before they can become this powerful ally for your logistics, tracking data must undergo a makeover. Our Everysens visibility platform can achieve this makeover. For us, every logistics asset (wagons, trailers, containers, etc) has its story, that can be told in two different ways. Either we tell the real-time story, or the long-term one, through dataviz and analytics.
Real-time logistics: manage the day-to-day operations
On a daily basis, your railcars’, trailers’ or containers’ adventures are made up of several chapters: did they spend time at the port, in maintenance or loading.
As they are happening, logistics events are displayed in real time in our logistics visibility platform. GPS data is no longer a point on a map: it is instantly analyzed to become a valuable information. Supply chain managers and coordinators can then directly advise what to do to resolve possible incidents.
A long-term story of fleet and flows: how to optimize a transportation plan
On the longer term, a second type of story, a collective one, is weaved. Comings and goings of trailers, easels, rolls, containers or wagons draw your logistics’ behaviour global patterns.
This story requires advanced data processing and in particular Big Data calculation methods. To make this story accessible, we upgraded our data visualization module. The goal is for you to easily explore your logistics analytics, on a strategic level.
On our logistics visibility platform, you navigate seamlessly from macro logistics KPI to granular statistics. This allows you to implement corrective actions.
Dataviz in action: how to maximize rotations?
Let’s take an example. You are kicking off a project aimed at maximizing your fleet’s rotations.
First, you check the rotations volume, for onward and return trips. This gives you a global indication of your activity, but does not allow you to take any action whatsoever.
You decide to dig in and refine your understanding through a visualization of rotation data by flow. The thicker the line, the more rotations there are on this path. The redder the colour, the longer the rotation. You choose to focus on a thick, red flow, so that your actions have a visible impact.
On this particular flow, how do your wagons, trailers and specific packaging behave? This is what you will discover thanks to the utilization rate. You can also zoom in on unproductive times. For example, by clicking on the parking time at the station, the average time per station is displayed. You can then take action with the “bad students” to optimize your turnover rate.
There you go! In just a few clicks, you went from a global analysis of rotations to a concrete corrective action.
You can explore other analysis paths on this module, focusing on filling, use and on-time delivery.
